Oppidan, from the Latin for "townsman"

Meet the townsmen.

Every house cocktail is a character from the town: the Architect, the Novelist, the Jockey, the Gardener. Pick a spirit, pick a character, and make one tonight.

Try the original black-and-white archive, a mixed edit, or color. Mr. Fitz has a new AI color study; other portraits use a subtle color tint, with cocktail photography on selected recipes.

Four Grain

The Old Fashioned

The one everyone knows, made the way the proof deserves.

Botanical Gin

Mr. Fitz

A rather distinguished character. Grapefruit, elderflower and a bright botanical spirit.

Botanical Gin

Flyboy

Goggles up, scarf out, always just back from somewhere.

Botanical Gin

The Gardener

Up at dawn, tending what grows. Earns the first cold drink of the evening.

Botanical Gin

The Sophisticate

Knows the wine list by heart and still orders something with bubbles.

Botanical Gin

The Mortician

Calm, precise and very good at bringing people back to life.

Botanical Gin

The Baller

Doesn't need much. Just the good stuff and a lot of ice.

Old Tom Gin and a cold, dark Martinez filled to the rim with a dark maraschino cherry

Old Tom

The Martinez

The Manhattan's older, gin-drinking cousin, and the drink Old Tom was made for.

Old Tom

The Tom Collins

Named for the gin, not the man. Tall, bright and smoky with ours.

Malted Rye

The Novelist

Stays up too late, writes it all down, and drinks a Sazerac by another name.

Malted Rye

The Roamer

Never in one town long. Travels light: whiskey, lemon, a little sweet.

Malted Rye

The Big Wig

Corner office, corner booth. Takes his Manhattan with a twist of absinthe.

Malted Rye

The Architect

Plans every angle. Three ingredients, perfectly in proportion.

Malted Rye

The Curator

Collects good things and keeps them simple.

Malted Rye

The Soloist

Needs no accompaniment.

Solera

The Jockey

Small, fast and sharper than he looks.

Solera

The Pipeman

Armchair, cardigan, something resinous on the side table.

Solera

The Typesetter

Works in small pieces until the whole page is right.

Solera

The Purist

Starts with the spirit and takes his time with the rest.
